The project replaces an uninhabitable house in Schaerbeek with a high-quality, affordable co-living home. It prioritises generous shared spaces over large private units, reducing rental costs while fostering collective living in a gentrifying neighbourhood.
Winner of the be.exemplary 2019 award, the project stands out for its environmental and social commitment. Existing materials are carefully dismantled and reused, excavated soil is transformed into raw earth bricks, and natural, low-impact materials are prioritised. Green roofs, rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse systems reduce environmental impact and operating costs.
The structure separates primary and secondary elements, allowing prefabrication, flexibility and future adaptability. Sustainability here is not an end in itself, but a tool to achieve long-term social, economic and environmental value.
