This project, winner of Renolab.B 2023, concerns the transformation and extension of a attached house located in Saint-Gilles. This renovation aims to create an office and a music studio on the ground floor, as well as a three-bedroom dwelling on the upper floors. The building, dating from 1870, was originally a working-class house with a shop and a workshop on the ground floor. This spatial organisation, taking advantage of the existing structure, has been designed to allow the evolution of lifestyles. The project was designed to offer a certain programmatic and spatial flexibility. This adaptability allows the building to transform over time, anticipating the future needs of its occupants. Spatial flexibility is ensured by the use of a timber frame with dry assemblies for the extension, also by load-bearing structures limited to the façades and the central staircase. Interior partitions are designed without technical services to facilitate their relocation. Technical flexibility is obtained by stacking the wet rooms, allowing easy interior modifications
Acoustics were a key concern due to the music studio, with the workshop separated from the house and anti-vibration supports and insulated partitions. The project uses low-embodied-energy, non-toxic, recyclable materials, including lime-hemp blocks, cork, lime and clay renders, and wood-fibre products. Existing elements such as floors, masonry, and the staircase are preserved or reused. Sustainable measures include rainwater recovery, low-water-use equipment, a green roof, native plantings, and preserved façade holes for birds.
The renovation demonstrates a holistic approach, combining heritage preservation, energy efficiency, resource management, and adaptability.
