Creation of a single apartment in an existing house for an 87-year-old owner who wishes to remain in her home while adapting the ground floor. The house, built in the 1950s by the client, is being converted so she can live with her daughter. The ground floor currently contains a garage, boiler, laundry, and storage. The goal was to create a new apartment connected to the garden.

Due to the small size of the ground floor, two strategies were applied. First, an extension was built to align the rear facades with the neighboring houses, with a diagonal connecting the two extensions. Second, a careful study of the plan’s functions was conducted to maximize comfort and the efficient use of space. The living room features large windows opening onto the garden, while the extension provides a spacious outdoor terrace for the first-floor apartment. The rear façade is articulated in three levels, each treated differently. The kitchen opens to the garden through a large window, and the diagonal façade is kept closed to ensure privacy from the neighbor. A perforated aluminum skin allows additional light to penetrate the interior.
